  3. Overview:
  4. Welcome to Just a Reminder.  This is great simple control panel where you can store messages to remind yourself of important events.  You can also use it as an alarm clock.  Since the program is a control panel, you don't need to have the program open for it to be working.  To run the program, just drag it onto your System Folder.  The system will place it into the control panels folder.  The restart your computer to load the program.  It requires System 7.0 or later.

  7. Entering Messages:
  8. You enter the messages by opening the control panel.  The control panel window looks like this:

The messages that are scheduled to be displayed are listed in chronological order.  The When column shows the time when a particular message is set to be displayed next.  There are two types of messages you can enter one time messages and repeating messages.  One time messages are displayed once at given time.  Repeating messages are displayed at repeating intervals of time which you can define.  The How column displays how often repeating messages are displayed.  Under this column, a blank indicates a one time message, m is a message that repeats in minutes, H is hours, D is days, W is weeks, M is months, and Y is years.  You add messages to play back later by clicking on the Add button.  This is the add dialog screen to enter messages:

  55. The controls at the bottom left of the screen let you set a date and time to play the message.  The controls at the bottom right of the screen allow you to make the message a repeating message which can range from minutes to years.

  57. The other buttons in the control panel include the Edit button, which allows you to edit previously entered messages, and the Registration button which allows you to register your program.  You may also double click on any message to edit it.

  60. Displaying Messages:
  61. Just a Reminder automatically displays any message when the time for its display is current or has been surpassed.  This is the display message window:

The buttons at the bottom of the display window allow you to edit or remove any repeating messages.  Also, if the message is a one time message, there is a Keep button that allows you to keep the message for later display.  All one time messages are otherwise erased.  For repeating messages that repeat in minutes or hours, the repeat interval is added to the time when the message is displayed.  For all other repeating messages, the time interval is added to the actual time for when the message was to be displayed.  Important:  The display window is not able to be displayed if the Just a Reminder control panel is open.  You should always close the control panel when you are finished with it.

  82. The JAR prefs file:

The JAR prefs file is automatically created the first time you run the program.  It is located in the Preferences folder.  This is the file that actually contains the data for the messages to display.  It is a good idea to make a copy of this file in case it becomes damaged or lost.  Do not move this file or Just a Reminder will not be able to find it.
